Just in case it needs to be said…artificial intelligence will NEVER be used to create one of my books. In fact, I asked to have a clause included in my contract that spelled out that neither party will use AI in the creation of our work together.
Of course, we’ll use spellcheck. And I’m sure there are a few little robots working in the background at all times as I write this post on WordPress.
But I can proudly say I have never used ChatGPT for anything, let alone for a creative endeavor I have dreamed about my entire life.
I am vehemently opposed to generative AI from both an ethical and environmental perspective and will always do my best to challenge it as “the norm.” (The tech bros are trying to make it the norm because they’ve sunk so much money into it. But we don’t need it, especially not to replace human art.)
All of that is to say, you will find the Oxford comma and em dashes in my book. (Honestly, probably too many em dashes.) But I use those because I’m an English major, an editor, and an author. Not because I’m a planet-destroying, mind-melting string of code.
I know it is only a matter of time before my book is pirated and then eaten by some AI machine. That’s depressing as hell, but I’m encouraged by the authors and publishers who are fighting back (and gaining ground) in this war. I’ll see you on the front lines soon…
